Unanimously elected at the helm of the Global Alliance of Organizations of People with Disabilities (IDA) the President of the ESDP and the European Disability Forum, Ioannis Vardakastanis, on Thursday, December 16th.
The Global Alliance of Disability Organizations is an umbrella organisation that brings together over 1,100 organizations of people with disabilities, chronic diseases and their families from eight global and six regional organizations.
IDA promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities and chronic diseases in global efforts to promote human rights and sustainable development. It supports disability organisations to hold their governments to account and support change at local, national and international levels.
With member organizations around the world, IDA represents more than a billion people with disabilities living across the globe. Among them are some of the largest and most marginalized groups in the world. With its unique composition, including the leading international organizations for the rights of persons with disabilities, IDA is considered by the UN as the most authoritative organisation representing people with disabilities worldwide.
The cornerstone of IDA's work is the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD). IDA promotes its effective implementation through coordinated action by representative organisations of persons with disabilities to ensure compliance at national, regional and international level.
The 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals are also an integral part of IDA's work to promote sustainable development involving people with disabilities. It works with allies and partners to build the capacity of people with disabilities and their organizations around the world to defend their collective rights and participate in the design and implementation of the policies and practices needed to implement them.
