The Lausanne Supreme Court of Arbitration (CAS) halved the sentence proposed last year by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) for Russia, but even so the country will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics and the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.
The original sentence was a four-year ban from all sports for violating anti-doping rules. However, CAS gives the opportunity to Russian athletes who had never been punished for doping to participate in international competitions under a neutral flag.
