On January 27, according to the Statute of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, elections will be held for the new administration of the institution.
Having listened with due diligence to the ideas, suggestions and exhortations of the executives of a very large majority of sports federations, as well as to the positions of their recently elected representatives in the HOC Plenary, I feel, with the appropriate responsibility towards the sports world of our country, that the time has come to announce my candidacy for the position of President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee.
My history in the Olympic movement of Greece goes back a long way and went through many challenges, successes and fortunately few disappointments. However, I have never ceased, in whatever positions I served, to stand by the problems and aspirations of each sport, and to support closely the "wants" and "cans" of sports Federations and their athletes.
In the four four-year terms of its outgoing President Spyros Capralos, we cannot ignore the positive results brought by the collective effort of all of us. And throughout this time, my support, as well as that of my other HOC colleagues, of the institutional role of the President of the HOC has been unequivocal and sincere, as required by the unity of the Olympic Movement!
Today, responding to the will of a large group of Federations and Olympic Champions, and with absolute responsibility for my decisions, I ask for the vote of their representatives, so that together we can work for the further development of Greek sports, leading our athletes to greater and more successes and providing solutions that require leadership and effectiveness.
For these reasons, I solemnly declare, with strength and determination, that I will be a candidate for the position of President of the HOC. In this effort, I am moving forward with a message of unity and I am ready to offer what is required in order to achieve our goals.
On this occasion, I would like to publicly express my gratitude to all the members of the HOC and the Sports Federations for the support they have offered me all these years, each in his own way, in my course in the Olympic and sports movement of our country.
