The Head of Sports of New Democracy, Dora Palli, organized at the Athens Olympic Sports Center (OAKA) an event dedicated to Greek Olympic and Paralympic champions in the presence of the Secretary of the Organizing New Democracy Stelios Kontadakis.
The event was attended by Messrs. Voula Zygouri President Hellenic Olympic Winners Association, Evi Moraitidou Vice-President of the Hellenic Association, Georgia Ellinaki Silver Olympic champion, Vasilis Polymeros Olympic silver medalist in rowing, Anna Stroumbou World weightlifting champion, Maria Christoforidi World weightlifting champion, Agi Kasoumi shooting, Chryssa Biskitzi Olympic rowing champion, Sotiris Konsolas Olympic rowing champion, Chara Karyami bronze Olympic rhythmic gymnastics, Kostas Filippidis, Olympic champion pole vault, Sotiris Trakas, Olympic synchronized diving champion, Ioanna Bouziou, Olympic softball champion, Grigoris Polychronidis, President of the Hellenic Paralympic Champions Association, Paralympic gold medalist Botsia, Thodoris Alexas, Paralympic sailing champion, Member of the National amputee football team, Vasilis Christoforou Paralympic sailing champion, Anna Denta Paralympic gold medalist.
The event was also attended by the General Manager – Coordinator of OAKA Mr. Konstantinos Halioris, the members of the Executive Committee of the Sector George Alikakos President of ETHNOA and Denise Panagopoulou General Manager of ETHNOA and the occupational psychologist Christina Nikolopoulou.
The Head of Sports Dora Palli thanked the Olympic champions, stressing that their presence "honors us because, apart from the excellent distinctions they have achieved, they are also unique role models for us, our children, for the entire Greek society"
In her speech she stated, inter alia:
"In recent years, many positive steps have been taken for sport. You also know that Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has a special interest in sports and emphasizes its importance for society.
And all of us are here tonight with a view to putting forward our proposals. You are well aware that the political leadership of sports headed by the Deputy Minister of Sports, Mr. Lefteris Avgenakis, has done very important work and has solved many problems. At the same time, we have to deal with other issues that you know firsthand. And it goes without saying that we have open ears to listen to you, to tell us your views and to find the best solutions."
The Secretary of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Stelios Kontadakis, welcomed the event and praised the role of the Olympic champions as role models for Greek society, while pointing out the importance of sport for our youth. He made special mention of the Paralympians who are the best example of effort in life. He also added that the New Democracy government has taken important steps for people with disabilities, stressing Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' sensitivity in this regard.
Finally, in the constructive dialogue that followed, it was stressed that we must continue to support sports and our youth, several issues were discussed, such as sports facilities, and everyone agreed on the excellent work that has been done to upgrade OAKA.
