The Olympic Committee Dual Career program in Athens

The Hellenic Olympic Committee had the honor to host at its headquarters the first transnational meeting of the European project "Olympic Committees for Dual Career" (OCDC) from 6 to 8 October 2022.

The OCDC is a two-year project, funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union for Education, Training, Youth and Sport. The main purpose of the project is to promote knowledge and understanding of the dual career between athletes competing in Olympic sports and the National Sports Federations.

The project partners – representatives of the National Olympic Committees of Greece, Poland, Lithuania, Slovenia, Turkey and the European Innovation and Knowledge Network (ΕUNIC) specializing in research in the field of sports – gathered in Athens, where they held an open discussion on the content of the questionnaire, which will be addressed to Olympic athletes of all ages. The aim of the research is to identify the challenges faced by athletes by combining championships with education and work, and to understand their needs and expectations regarding dual careers. Within the next few weeks, Olympic athletes will be invited through communication channels, including social media, to respond to this survey, as this will lay the foundation for the basic study of the project.

Based on the findings of the survey and the best practices identified by the participating National Olympic Committees, an action plan will be developed to bridge the gap between high-level sport and the future professional careers of athletes.

The representatives of the HOC at the meeting were the President of the HOC Athletes' Committee, Mrs. Voula Kozompoli, the Manager of European projects in the HOC, Mrs. Georgia Papathanasiou and the person in charge of the HOC for the dual career programs, a labor psychologist, Mrs. Christina Nikolopoulou.
