The President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee for Sofia Bekatorou

Announcement by the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee and IOC member Spyros Kapralos on Sofia Bekatorou.

"With Wisdom and Every Wisdom

As a member of the IOC in Greece, President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee but also as an olympic athlete, I feel angry at what our Olympic champion Sofia Bekatorou complained about the sexual abuse she suffered as a member of the National Sailing Team.

Sophia spoke of the violence she suffered and the devastating mental consequences of her abuse over the years. He made a brave decision at great mental cost. And we, all those involved in sport, must stand by it, demand that the case be immediately settled without questioning it and do everything in our power not to have to spend so many years in the future to find the courage of young athletes to report such traumatic events.

'As I said during the Start to Talk day we need to create in sport an environment that is safe, ethical, dignified and clean. Only in this way will parents be able to trust us with their children, only in this way will we be able to keep the new generation close to sport. Creating the right conditions that will prevent any delinquent behavior, any act immoral and malicious.

Sophia has found the courage to speak openly about her abuse and the recognition of her fortitude is not only self-evident but also necessary. I'm on her side and I'm going to support her with all my might. I urge other athletes to start speaking freely and openly. It is the only way to uncover all the ill-hidden issues of general violence, sexual, verbal, psychological and economic in sport."
