Protocol for the cooperation of the National Confederation of Persons with Disabilities with the Municipality of Athens

A protocol of cooperation was signed by the President of the National Confederation of Persons with Disabilities (ESAME) Ioannis Vardakastanis and the Mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyannis, at the City Hall of Athens. Also present on the part of the ESA WAS the Accessibility Expert – partner of the ESA, Marily Christofi, and the executive of the ESA, Dimitris Logaras.

As Mr Vardakastanis said, "this is a cooperation – compass. Municipalities have a very important role to play in improving the living conditions of people with disabilities." And he stressed that "there must be an accessibility movement where municipalities in cooperation with our organizations can play a very important role. Accessibility is key, it's a denominator." He also pointed out that what has been included in the memorandum can highlight Athens not only as an important city for our country but also for the whole of Europe. That is why Mr Vardakastanis argued that the Cooperation Protocol can be used to plan actions and interventions that can be claimed, even from the new resources that will come to the country. "Accessibility is an independent right in itself but it is also a means of exercising almost all rights" said Mr Vardakastanis while also referring to the meeting on this issue in The House between ESAMEKA, Minister of environment and energy K. Hatzidakis and G.G. Spatial Planning and Urban Environment Evth. Bakoyannis on the publication of the decision to restore accessibility to existing buildings. For his part, the mayor of Athens, Costas Bakoyannis, after saying that many of our fellow citizens feel "invisible and forgotten", pointed out: "From words, we go into practice. With the signing of the agreement for continuous and close cooperation with the National Confederation of Persons with Disabilities, we make an operational principle and do it together. We plan and intervene to restore access for people with disabilities throughout the city and create the conditions for their access everywhere. Without hindrance, in an Athens that respects them and shows it."
