800,000 people welcomed the Japanese Olympians and Paralympians of Rio!

An enthusiastic crowd estimated at 800,000 turned out in downtown Tokyo today to welcome home 87 Japanese Olympian and Paralympian medallists from the Rio 2016 Games. The crowds roared their appreciation as the Olympic and Paralympic heroes paraded in open-top buses through the city centre, waving to their fans and thanking them for their strong support.

The parade proceeded for about 2.5 kilometres from the Ginza district, Tokyo's world-famous shopping and dining area featuring trendy boutiques and world-class restaurants, to the traditional Nihonbashi district, the historical centre of Tokyo, with its fascinating mix of centuries-old establishments and cultural landmarks.
