The Accessibility Unit of the University of Macedonia pioneers in the field of accessibility for people with visual disabilities, placing Braille Signage in every area of the university.
The project was implemented in the framework of the program "Support of Social Care Interventions for Students of the University of Macedonia" (NSRF 2014-2020), with Professor Konstantinos Papadopoulos as Scientific Director.
Students, staff and visitors of the university can now be informed about the use/status of each area of the university, as approximately 400 braille tags are placed in auditoriums, classrooms, faculty and staff offices and all public areas. Thus, the University of Macedonia becomes the first university in the country with Braille Signage in every space.
As stated by the project manager, Professor Konstantinos Papadopoulos, "Accessibility emerges internationally as a dominant theme for achieving educational and social inclusion. Accessibility to higher education is a fundamental right of persons with disabilities. The unhindered operation of people with visual impairment in every environment / space, requires the universal accessibility of this space, which can be achieved through a number of complementary actions. One such action is the installation of braille signage. Our main goal is to make the University of Macedonia one of the most accessible universities in Europe. I believe that to a very large extent we have succeeded. However, we do not stop here, as developments in technology and especially in assistive technology constantly provide new possibilities."
