Opening for the Young Participatns Session of the International Olympic Academy

His Excellency the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Prokopios Pavlopoulos, will declare the opening of the works of the 58th International Session of the International Olympic Academy for Young Participants on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at Megaron – The Athens Concert Hall, Dimitris Mitropoulos Hall. The main subject of the Session is: “The Athlete as a Role Model” and its special subject is: “Challenges an Olympic Athlete faces as a role model”. The topic will be discussed thoroughly during the works of the Session that will take place in Ancient Olympia.The President of the International Olympic Academy will welcome the young men and women from all over the world while the Deputy Minister of Culture and Sport, Mr Georgios Vasileiadis and the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, Mr Spyros Capralos, will address the guests. In addition, a message on behalf of the IOC President, Dr Thomas Bach, will be read. 170 young men and women from 90 countries as well as 27 coordinators and 12 lecturers will participate in the 58th International Session that will be concluded on June 30.

During the ceremony at Megaron, the honorary distinction “Delphi” will be awarded to Mr Barry Maister, ONZM, IOC member for New Zealand, while the honorary distinction “Athena” will be awarded to the National Olympic Academy of Japan. The honorary distinction “Athina” will be awarded to Prof. Stephen G. Miller, Professor Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, USA. Finally, the honorary distinction “Olympia” will be awarded to Prof. Dr Ingomar Weiler, Professor Emeritus at KarlFranzens University, Graz, Austria. The musical parts of the ceremony will be interpreted by the Greek National Opera’s Children’s Chorus, accompanied by the pianist Mrs Irene Antoniadou, under the direction of Ms Konstantina Pitsiakou. The adaptation of the Olympic anthem and of the National Anthem of Greece for the children’s chorus is made by Mr Giannis Belonis.
